Lost or broken appliances
A cracked tray, a lost retainer and a wire that pokes your cheek are all things to call us about. Most are not emergencies, and here is what to do until you reach us.
- Swelling that spreads to your face, eye or neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, a serious blow to the head, or bleeding that won't stop needs emergency care now. Go to an emergency room or call 911. If a tooth is knocked out or broken, call our office right away.
What happens
The visits, in order
- 01
Step 1: Call us first
Call the office and say what happened. We tell you whether to wear it, stop or come in.
- 02
Step 2: Keep what you have
Keep a cracked or old tray in its case. Don't glue or trim anything.
- 03
Step 3: Protect your mouth
For a poking wire, a small piece of orthodontic wax over it helps until your visit.
- 04
Step 4: Come in
We fix, replace or re-scan, and you leave knowing what changes in your plan.
Before you decide
Comfort, other routes, risks and billing
Comfort
Wax over a sharp edge and a soft diet until your visit are enough for most people. Don't cut a wire yourself.
Other routes
Sometimes the next set in your series works in place of a lost one. Dr. Hussain decides, and says why.
Risks and after-care
A tray that doesn't fit can leave your teeth unprotected and unmoved. After a repair we tell you what to watch for.
How it's billed
A repair or a replacement is quoted in writing before we make it. Insurance and payment are on the fees page.

Questions about lost or broken appliances
Should I keep wearing a cracked tray?
Call us first. A tray with a sharp edge can cut your cheek, and Dr. Hussain tells you whether to wear it.
I lost a retainer. How soon do I need a new one?
Call us as soon as you can. Teeth can move in days without it, and we can scan and make a new one.
Is there an after-hours number?
Not at this office. Our hours are on the contact page, and for an emergency, call 911.
