Retainers

A retainer is a removable tray or a thin wire that holds your teeth where they are once treatment ends. Every course finishes with one, and it is for as long as you want your teeth to stay put.

What happens

The visits, in order

  1. 01

    Step 1: A final scan

We scan your teeth again, and Dr. Hussain checks the movement against the plan.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Your retainers

Maeve hands you your retainers and shows you how to wear and clean them.

  3. 03

    Step 3: A first check

Dr. Hussain checks that the retainers fit and answers your questions.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Looking after them

Keep them in their case, clean them daily and bring them to check-ins.

Keeping them

A small case and a habit

Most retainer problems start with a retainer left on a tray or in a pocket. A case, a habit and a call to us when one doesn't fit anymore are most of what it takes.

What helps

  • A case with you, always

  • Clean daily with a soft brush

  • Call us if one stops fitting

Before you decide

Comfort, other routes, risks and billing

  • Comfort

A new retainer can feel snug for a day or two. Call us if it hurts or if an edge rubs.

  • Other routes

Some people choose a thin wire bonded behind their teeth instead of a tray. Dr. Hussain explains what each involves, including the risks of each.

  • Risks and after-care

A retainer that no longer fits can mean your teeth have moved. Wearing it as told matters; a bonded wire needs careful cleaning around it.

  • How it's billed

The first retainers are listed on your estimate. A replacement is quoted in writing before we make it.

Questions about retainers

How long do I wear them?

Dr. Hussain tells you how long to wear them each day at first and what to do later. Teeth can move at any age, so many people keep wearing them.

Can I get a replacement?

Yes. Call us and we'll scan, quote the fee in writing and make a new one.

Can I wear my old ones?

Bring them to a check-in and Dr. Hussain checks the fit before you do.
